I've found that having a straight-through (TIA 568-A/B) cable in my hands is
all I need.
That, and a couple connectors:
1) RJ45 to RJ45 coupler
You can find these at Home Depot for $3.00.
Make sure you check the wiring - some support 2 or 4 wires only. You want 8.
2) A 2-3" Crossover Cable
Remember, cross 1 to 3, and 2 to 6.
3) A 2-3" Cisco (flatover) Cable
Like flatover implies, 1 to 8, 2 to 7, 3 to 6, 4 to 5.
Most console connections and Cisco devices use this.
4) A null-modem cable
Connect 2 to 3, and 5 to 5.
Yeah, you should also do 7 to 8.
Then there's the whole DB9 to 8 wires. I get by with 2 to 3, and 5 to 5. :)
