    Ethernet (for HPC) - GigE, Ten GigE

Well, GigE sounds good (cost, in-house expertise) but Ethernet has a
very high overhead (throughput, latency).

If serious about Ethernet, check out the TCP Offload Engine (TOE) cards that
have IC that processes the lower layers of the network stack, freeing the CPU
from a significant workload.
